Yes, I know I’m having problems…

I’m still playing with the blog template. I’m thinking about starting over from scratch since I have too many things happening right now which is causing some incompatibility errors. Bear with me…

It’s an omen

This morning I sat with a group of guys who were comparing their exercise and diet routines. One had just been diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic, and another in the group also struggles with the disease. I sat quietly in the corner, trying to hide my 100 lb thorn in the flesh, knowing that […]

Format Changes

My father is giving me a hard time about the format change. He prefers the old format without the graphic label. Well, Jerry, you can set up your own blog at blogger and play with it to your heart’s content…

Does Mars look like a desert in California?

Here is the 360 view from Mars. It requires Quicktime, but is pretty cool.

Epiphany

I came across a good article on the MethodX site today. The author, Sarah Parsons, writes: When I lament my ordinary, boring life, I am chastised by Rilke’s words in Letters to a Young Poet: “If your everyday life seems poor, don’t blame it; blame yourself; admit to yourself that you are not enough of […]

New Title, New Banner

Yes, I’ve changed the title of the blog. “Jay’s Journal” seemed too blah. “Only wonder understands” comes from a quote by Gregory of Nyssa that I keep posted above my desk at work. The full quote goes “Concepts create idols, only wonder understands.” What Greg was getting at (I hope at least) is that our […]

Do You KNow Who You Are?

We had a good service today at AUMC. My voice is still shot (I have the Joe Cocker thing going on) but I decided to go ahead and preach. I made sure to get a handheld mic. and hold it close to my mouth. I think folks could hear me. Today’s service, as is true […]

Doug Pagitt’s New Book

Doug’s book is finally coming out, and as one who reviewed the galleys and made suggestions to Doug, I want to commend this to everyone. What Solomon’s Porch is trying to accomplish is commendable (and frankly, I wish I had the guts to step out and try to create something as Doug has).

Go Titans

Okay, so they lost. But the game was close and they fought well. I thought the defense was flat compared with previous weeks. Of course, Patriots fans would say that their offense was just that much better. But here’s the secret. The reason the Titans lost is because I actually watched the game. I’m not […]

The Labels We Give Ourselves

I was pointed this morning to a post by Hugoboy on Ann Coulter’s recent article on Democrats and Religion. Hugo rightly skewers Coulter, who I frankly believe suffers from some sort of psychosis. However, reading the article and commentary set me to thinking about these labels that we place on ourselves: Republican and Democrat, liberal […]

Am I Really Quoting the National Review?

Hugoboy pointed me to an article by Deroy Murdock in the National Review which, much to my surprise I agree with. Given my earlier comments on gay marriage and my previous post, it makes a lot of sense to me. Murdock writes: Social conservatives are working overtime to argue that gay marriage would imperil straight […]

How Do We Know What We Know?

Matt Taibbi at the New York Press offers and interesting analysis as to how Howard Dean has won the “angry” label for his campaign. He documents how this label has been perpetuated throughout the media based less on actual experience and fact, and more on innuendo and reputation. He suggests that the “angry” label originated […]

Quote of the Week

I had to share this from Jordan Cooper: Quote of the Week “Going in and occupying Iraq, thus unilaterally exceeding the United Nations’ mandate, would have destroyed the precedent of international response to aggression that we hoped to establish. Had we gone the invasion route, the United States could conceivably still be an occupying power […]

The Passion

Yesterday, Rudy at Urban Onramps wrote about his preview of “The Passion” by Mel Gibson. The same day, I also received a catalog from Outreach which featured a DVD and several campaigns for churches that tied to this movie. Of course, I’ve been receiving the non-stop e-mails from folks promoting the movie, and have also […]

Various Ramblings

My head is all over the place tonight so here are a few unconnected thoughts: I Love I-Tunes Although I most not be truly pomo and have migrated to a Mac, I still love the Windows version of I-Tunes. The business model is one that I can live with (although when you cruch the numbers, […]
