Yes, I’ve changed the title of the blog. “Jay’s Journal” seemed too blah.
“Only wonder understands” comes from a quote by Gregory of Nyssa that I keep posted above my desk at work. The full quote goes “Concepts create idols, only wonder understands.”
What Greg was getting at (I hope at least) is that our desire to categorize, conceptualize, and compartmentalize leads to idolatry as those descriptors and concepts lock us into a rigid framework of knowing. Instead, we are called by God to wonder, awe, and amazement, which leads us to the true understanding that we really don’t know anything.
I’m much more comfortable with concepts. I’m trying to learn wonder. I hope you will help me as we go through this journey together.
