A conversation that brings me joy and gives me hope:
Dad, I wish they would stop talking so much about those Iowa caucus things. After all, it’s not like it’s the final election or anything.
But they are important honey. It’s the first sign of who might be nominated as the candidates that we will vote on.
Yeah, but it’s boring . . . and it’s not like it’s in Tennessee or anything.
But dear, last night was historic. Don’t you know that for the first time in the history of the U.S. a black man won an election that puts him one step closer to the White House . . . and he did it in a state that was 98% white.
Gosh dad . . . that sounds kind of racist on your part.
Huh? No it’s not racist, because I am celebrating that we have gotten to the point where it just might be possible to have an African American president.
You sounded racist to me . . . after all, why should it be a big deal whether he is African American or not?
Ouch.
Wow, it’s cool how to catch a glimpse of how upcoming generations view the world. Thanks for a window into that.
