I have been struggling with fear because I live in a dangerous city too. In fact, I live in 2 cities that have roots of violence: New Orleans, LA and Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Interesting topic. We hear the word “fear” thrown around so much. I live in a rough neighborhood. I can’t walk to the corner without seeing a prostitute or a drug dealer and we’ve had several murders on my block in the past year. I think a healthy amount of fear (or maybe a better word is caution) is a good thing, but not if it keeps us from doing what God has for us to do. My apartment was burglarized earlier this year, but I made a deliberate decision to just let it go. But I take reasonable precautions to keep it from happening again. God has called me to live where I do ministry and I’m not going to let fear drive me to a “safer” neighborhood.
